Adapter Surge Protector

Grounding Adapter + Surge Protector? Does it work?
I recently rented an old rental and discovered that almost all of the outlets were two pronged. The only three pronged outlets are one for the wall AC, one under the sign for the garbage disposal, and one on the kitchen sink counter. It appears to be a GFCI wall plate.
First question: Can I plug a multiple tap device into the kitchen GFCI wall plate, or would this defeat the safety function of the GFCI?
Second question: If install grounding adapters at the two prong plates, would I be able to plug in a multiple prong surge protector power strip? (Let's assume that the test strip shows that the adapter is grounded).

p.s. I realize I may need to call in a qualified electrician to deal with this, but your responses will at least enable me to ask the right questions and have a handle on what I am dealing with.

This link suggests one could install a GFCI, and then plug in a surge protector to that.
You should buy a cheap voltage tester and test for a ground small slot on outlet is hot put one lead in there and other lead on middle screw if you get voltage you have a ground and can use a adapter or can change plug to grounded type if you dont have a ground you should change the outlet to a GFCI plug
