Why does my cat eat plastic bags?
My cat chews on plastic shopping bags and I cant get him to stop! Sometimes he does it to get my attention, but he gets into the cupboard where I keep them chews them at night to! I know it probably isn't good for him to be swallowing the plastic! So other than keeping my bags locked up, what can I do?
This is a bad habit you need to stop. Plastic gets entwined in the gut and may kill as it twists the entrails and bowel into knots. If your cat shows any sign of discomfort he needs to see a vet, and the vet needs to know about his plastic addiction.
Please take the bags away - shut them in your car or a suitcase if you can't get to the supermarket to recycle them. He also needs to know that chewing plastic is bad - a quick squirt of water from an old Fairy bottle when he gets the urge would be appropriate.
Then give kitty some rope to chew on, a piece of sisal coated with a liberal sprinkling of catnip powder would be spiffing to keep his interest. I fear he is in fact lonely and needs some stimulation. Do you play with him? Does he have company through the day? Think about his routine and how you can enrich his existence. Maybe a playmate.......
