If synonyms are counted once, how many daily-used words there are in the English Language?
English is famous for its synonyms. As a English learner, I am thoroughly conquered by that. When preparing for an English exam which requires me to remembering 6000 words , I find that there are so many words with almost the same meaning. for xample ,garbage / junk / rubbish /trash ,baggage / luggage , curious / peculiar / weird / odd / eccentric / bizarre ,etc . If we count each group as a words ,how many everyday used words there are in English? ( If counted like this, there may be only 1500~2000 words in the 6000 vacabulary for my exam. But it is sufficient to read original English articles with few words obstacles. )

To be clear though, although you may consider your example synonyms to be all the same, in practice each word takes on a definition all of it's own. For example, garbage and junk. Garbage is definitely something that has to be thrown away. Junk, however, is something that may seem like garbage, but in time, a piece of junk can come in quite handy to finish a particular project. The same applies to all other words.
So in all fairness, although you may able to carry on a conversation with a limited amount of vocabulary, you may not understand someone Else's conversation unless you know the entire vocabulary. Using the same words repetitively would not only be boring, but meanings would be lost in context.
If one were to see someone casting furtive glances around themselves, one would describe the behavior as peculiar. If one were to see someone flailing their arms and clucking like a chicken, one would be more likely to describe that behavior as bizarre, not peculiar. So you see, synonyms don't necessarily imply that words are identical.
