Is it bad to mix speaker gauge?
I have a audio receiver (100 W per channel plus a 100 or 150 watt sub), and 5.1 surround speakers that came with 20 AWG (that's gauge, right?). Went to radio shack to extend the wires and bought 18 gauge (so the radio shack wire is thicker than the wire my speakers came with). Is this bad?
Not a problem......18 and 20 are pretty thin.......I'd upgrade to 14 if the speakers are larger than a cube-speaker.....Home depot sells 14 guage a whole lot cheaper than radio shack sells 18
Also, as long as you use an extension that is larger than the original wires you'll be fine......so if you had 18 built into the speaker, I wouldn't extend it with a 20.....but either 18 or 16 would be fine.
