Does anything between 9.5g and 10g show up as 10g on a digital scale which measures at 1g increments?
If something weighs say 9.7 grams will it show up as 10 grams?

''Aqui en los Estados Unidos hablamos ingles....o, y espanol tambien'': Students' emerging language ideologies and literacy practices in a dual language primary program. $49.99 This dissertation is a mixed-methods study of language ideologies and literacy practices in Dual Language (DL) programs. The ideologies of participants were examined in five schools with DL programs, one specific DL program at Presidio Primary, two first grade DL classrooms and in students' homes.;The quantitative data consisted of a questionnaire, Teachers' Language Ideologies (TLI), consisting of demographic, five-point Likert scale and open-ended items. MANOVA was applied to 209 questionnaires to explore group differences on four factors of language ideologies. Participants' bilingualism had little influence on their language ideologies and practices while teacher assignment and certificate had a significant influence.;Qualitative research methods included observations, interviews and Critical Discourse Analysis. Official Discourse was uncovered through policy documents and administrator interviews. Analysis showed asymmetrical treatment of two programs: discourse on transitional bilingual/ESL programs demonstrated language-as-problem and assimilationist ideologies whereas discourse on DL programs demonstrated language-as-resource and linguistic pluralism.;Qualitative findings also showed there was a divide between Spanish dominant and English dominant mothers related to DL implementation and literacy instruction. Spanish dominant mothers questioned the practice of delaying formal introduction of English literacy. Despite the fact that their parents had enrolled them in the DL program, not all students held positive views of Spanish and English at Presidio Primary. The children appeared to be most influenced by their families' perspectives on language rather than the school environment. Remarkably, children's ideological stances mirrored closely those of their mothers, demonstrating the importance of parental voice for successful DL program implementation. |

These farmers improved the traditional methods of cattle raising and driving to increase their profit and, despite the remoteness and isolation of this Appalachian region, maintained important family and economic ties to eastern markets. The first white settlers came to this frontier region with a pre-existing commercial orientation, raising livestock and other agricultural products for external markets, as well as local exchange markets. The coming of the French and Indian War drove many of the early settlers back to the east. Positioned at a strategic point for Virginia's frontier defense, the remaining farmers produced agricultural provisions for the military markets. Lord Dunmore's War and the American Revolution further expanded the opportunities for farmers in the South Branch Valley to engage in commercial markets. After the American Revolution, a number of farmers in the South Branch Valley built large-scale commercial livestock operations, becoming the wealthiest farmers in western Virginia at the end of the eighteenth century. They expanded their network of commercial production to incorporate the newly opened Ohio lands at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Farmers from the South Branch created a network of family and economic ties that reached from the East Coast to Ohio and farther into the Midwest. This commercialism in the South Branch Valley laid the basis for the Midwestern cattle industry and is one of the earliest examples of commercialism on the Appalachian frontier. |

'Labours in the cause of humanity in every part of the globe': Transatlantic philanthropic collaboration and the cosmopolitan ideal, 1760--1815. $49.99 Working together, citizens of the Atlantic world expanded the scale and scope of philanthropic activity. This dissertation moves beyond questions about the economic motives behind the rise of humanitarianism. Instead, through a transatlantic and transassociational study, with particular focus on medical philanthropy, it focuses on how philanthropists built a complex charitable infrastructure and found ways to help suffering strangers near and far. This study reveals that activists recast organized beneficence through targeted changes that they collected and crafted as a result of a cosmopolitan approach to the world common in their era. Eighteenth-century philanthropists bequeathed to their successors an accelerating pace of growth, a vastly elaborated charitable landscape, and the expectation of a worldwide reach. The developments that made possible those legacies unfolded as the Consumer Revolution burgeoned, the globe became more integrated (giving rise to a pragmatic cosmopolitanism among many people), and Americans and Britons made and unmade the empire. Rather than a major transformation, expansion of humanitarian activity rested on measured change. Through focused and incremental innovations trafficked among people around the Anglophone Atlantic, philanthropists identified more and more discrete groups as objects worthy of charitable assistance, enlarged the universe of eleemosynary institutions, and found routine ways to extend charity beyond local or particularistic boundaries. This dissertation studies that evolution through analyses of philanthropists' activities at both the transnational and local levels. It first examines the role of geographically mobile individuals in the collection, transmission, and introduction to urban Atlantic communities of new programs.
