What are your best tips for travelling with dogs?
Two puppies, first major road trip in a few weeks. (And they *are* droolers and pukers.)
They have both safety harnesses and folding travel crates.
Firstly, if they are droolers and pukers, I would really recommend working on desensitizing them to the car. Go for short drives with them, around the block, around town, out into the country and back, slowly increasing the amount of time they are spending in the car. If they don't seem nauseous at the end of the ride, go ahead and give them a treat. Some puppies get nauseous because they are anticipating a nasty trip to the vet, others just get motion sick. Also, you might want to talk to your vet about medication you can give for this problem. Benedryl may help calm them down and make them drowsy, and there may be something like pepto that you can use for the nausea as well.
That aside, be sure you have identification. Make sure your dogs are wearing properly adjusted collars with tags that have up to date information. Many people who travel with their pets will also make up cheaper temporary tags with their cell phone and contact information for the place they are staying (of course this only works if you're staying in one place for several days). Also be sure to have up-to-date documentation of all vaccines, including rabies. When I travel with my dog(s) they each get a colored folder/binder with all of their important documents (current health certificate if necessary, proof of rabies vaccine and registration, etc).
Another thing that may be good to bring along with you is some water from home. Depending on where you are going and how long you are staying, it may be safest to have some water that they are "used to." It sounds weird, but where I live the water can taste either good or really nasty within about 20 miles...for example, tap water from one town is tainted with sulfur because they didn't quite block all of the coal mines when they filled the lake and sulfur leaked into the local water supply. It's still drinkable, but it tastes really gross...especially if you aren't used to it or aren't expecting it. Also, having water on hand with you in the car is useful for rest stops. And don't forget to bring along a collapsable water bowl.
If your dogs are friendly, consider putting bandannas on them. It sounds stupid, but people are more likely to consider a dog that is wearing a bandanna friendly than one that is just wearing a collar and leash. Obviously if your dogs don't like strangers, are fearful of people, or are aggressive this is not a good idea.
Try to keep as regular a schedule as possible while on the road. I know this is next to impossible, but it doesn't hurt to try. Try to schedule rest stops around the same time as you would normally take them out to potty or feed them. Always offer water at rest stops, even if it is just a little bit.
If their travel crates are not their normal crates, set them up in the house. Make the travel crates especially rewarding. If possible (I know some travel crates are cloth and not at all hard for a dog with any desire to tear out of) use the travel crates for a while instead of their regular crates. This will get them used to the crates and it will make the crates seem (and smell) more like home when you're on the road.
