Breaking Ground $84 Breaking Ground examines travel writing’s contribution to the development of a Russian national culture from roughly 1700 to 1850, as Russia struggled to define itself against Western Europe. Russian examples of literary travel writing began with imitative descriptions of grand tours abroad, but progressive familiarity with the West and with its literary forms gradually enabled writers to find other ways of describing the experiences of Russians en route. Blending foreign and native cultural influences, writers responded to the pressures of the age—to Catherine II, Napoleon, and Nicholas I, for example—both by turning “inward” to focus on domestic touring and by rewriting their relationship to the West. This book tracks the evolution of literary travel writing in this period of its unprecedented popularity and demonstrates how the expression of national identity, the discovery of a national culture, and conceptions of place—both Russian and Western European-were among its primary achievements. These elements also constitute travel writing’s chief legacy to prose fiction, “breaking ground” for the later masterpieces of writers such as Turgenev, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy. For literary scholars, historians, and other educated readers with interests in Russian culture, travel writing, comparative literature, and national identity. |

Excerpt: "Eternal Father, Strong to Save", from The Hymnal Army and Navy which was used by American forces during World War II "Eternal Father, Strong to Save" is a hymn often associated with the Royal Navy or the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps . Accordingly, it is often known as the Royal Navy Hymn or the United States Navy Hymn (or just The Navy Hymn ), and sometimes by the last line of its first verse, For those in peril on the sea .History The original hymn was written by William Whiting of Winchester, England , in 1860. It was originally intended as a poem for a student of his, who was about to travel to the United States . In 1861, John B. Dykes , an Anglican clergyman, composed the tune "Melita" for this hymn. "Melita" is an archaic term for Malta , an ancient seafaring nation and the site of a shipwreck involving the Apostle Paul mentioned in Acts of the Apostles (chapters |

55 Broadway $59 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! 55 Broadway is a notable building overlooking St James's Park in London. It was designed by Charles Holden and built between 1927 and 1929. It was built as a new headquarters building for the Underground Electric Railways Company of London (UERL), the main forerunner of London Underground. Faced with Portland stone and covering a site with an irregular footprint, the upper office floors of the building are on a cruciform plan, stepping back towards the central clock tower at the top. The cruciform design afforded the optimum level of natural light to the offices. The ground floor now contains a shopping arcade and many art deco details. Previously the ground floor was also given over to London Transport offices, including a travel information centre, cash office and a library. The whole building straddles St. James's Park tube station, the east and west wings being immediately above the railway tunnel. When finished it was the tallest steel-framed office building in London, until another Holden building, the University of London's Senate House, (based on similar designs and materials) took the accolade. |

A 1,000-Mile Walk on the Beach: One Woman's Trek of the Perimeter of Lake Michigan $14.41 In 2009, Loreen Niewenhuis walked completely around Lake Michigan. This book chronicles that journey, a 1,000-mile walk around the world's fifth-largest lake. The book explores both the geology of the lake and the measure of a person--a woman, married, mother of two sons (who joined her for portions of the walk). But most of the walk was done solo, an adventure in discovery of self and place. Niewenhuis conveys a sense of the magnitude of the lake she loves, a place so elemental to the four Midwestern states that form its shores. From a ground-level perspective, the book explores the natural and human history of Lake Michigan . . . and raises important questions about preserving our wild places and protecting fragile ecosystems on which we all depend. |

A Bad Day on Planet Earth $6.99 A Bad Day on Planet Earth, is a science fiction novel about a group of college students who make a trip to Mammoth Cave during their spring break. Their decision to travel there instead of to Florida or some other exotic location actually results in saving their lives. While they are below ground within the cave system, the world is attacked by aliens, later called Onibs by the survivors. They are from the planet Patheon which orbits a companion star of the massive star, Sirius. The survivors discover that there is a secret laboratory located in an unused section of the cave. The scientists working there have developed a ray gun. This enables the people there to be able to survive the terrible dilemma facing the rest of the Earth. Later the survivors manage to capture Onib spaceships which they use to destroy domed cities that were built in North America. Fearing total annihilation by the Onibs, David Sears the hero along with many others take captured spaceships across the void of space in an attempt to destroy their home planet. Following the delivery of cobalt bombs on Patheon, the crew of the Earth ship become hopelessly lost in space for 18-years. They don't age because of traveling over 100-times the speed of light. At a later date they join forces with a group of survivors called Anterians. The two forces travel some 140 light-years across the galaxy to attack the last remaining Patheon planet. The plot offers a tantalizing climax to the story. It allows the readers to live vicariously within the scenes with the different characters within the novel. As in his novel, "Until the End of Time," the writer offers a different concept of travel across the sea of stars. |
