'89 Live in Japan $9.99 Sometime in 1992/1993 a revamped Quiet Riot featuring vocalist Kevin DuBrow with Bob Rondinelli on drums (around this time Rondinelli had also filled in on an Aerosmith gig one night when Joey Kramer wasn't available -- call him Mr. Fill-In) performed at a little-known club in Billerica, Massachusetts called Mr. Tipps. It is one of those suburban gigs we call "the last rung on the rock & roll ladder" and it's a pity because Quiet Riot had more than just a clever name, and more than the cachet of being the professional birthplace of guitar wizard Randy Rhodes. To those who don't know the story, DuBrow faced a mutiny by the band he founded and Pasha Records released an album in 1988 with two different members, titling the disc, interestingly enough, after the first Japanese release by the original group. This DVD, '89 Live in Japan, comes from that strange lineup in between and features vocalist Paul Shortino of the group Rough Cutt as well as bassist Sean McNabb and an uncredited Jimmy Waldo -- keyboard player from the groups New England and Alcatraz. Why Waldo is treated like a hired hand is one of those unique situations which seemed to develop after Flo & Eddie called Mountain's organ player Steve Knight "the most useless man in rock & roll." The statement was far from accurate, of course, but it was humorous and Mott the Hoople and Aerosmith would both push keyboardists to the side and pretty much off-stage after that infamous quip. Though the 1988 self-titled Quiet Riot album faced horrible reviews and little or no commercial acceptance, this DVD is actually quite enjoyable. As a live band, Q.R. had that long-hair-'80s-thing down pat. What replaces original vocalist DuBrow's personality is a very slick and well-executed heavy metal show. "Stay With Me Tonight" might not be a rock & roll classic, but it comes off well live and along with the nine in-concert tracks there is a bonus of the video shot for "Stay With Me." Although the band only played three gigs in August and September 1976, this album captures a night when everything fell right into place musically. That should only be expected with names like Eno and Simon Phillips in the lineup. (Still, the lesser-known players -- bassist Bill MacCormick, keyboardist Francis Monkman, and slide guitarist Lloyd Watson -- are in exemplary form, too.) The repertoire is boldly diverse, opening with "Lagrima," a crunchy solo guitar piece from Manzanera. Then the band undertakes a spacey but smoldering version of "Tomorrow Never Knows"; it's definitely among the cleverest of Beatles covers. Then it's on to crisp jazz-rock ("East of Asteroid"), atmospheric psych-pop ("Rongwrong"), and Eno's tape manipulation showcase, "Sombre Reptiles." And that's only the first five songs. The rest of the gig is no less audacious, with no less than three Eno songs -- including a frenetic "Baby's on Fire," "Third Uncle," and "Miss Shapiro"'s dense, syllable-packed verbal gymnastics. There's another unlikely cover of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me," while Manzanera turns in another typically gutsy instrumental performance on "Diamond Head." This album marks probably one of the last times that Eno rocked out in such an unself-consciously fun fashion, but that's not the only reason to buy it: 801 Live is a cohesive document of an unlikely crew who had fun and took chances. A Drug Problem That Never Existed $16.98 Between Mondo Generator's debut, 2000's Cocaine Rodeo, and their sophomore effort, 2003's A Drug Problem That Never Existed, the stakes had been raised considerably. Leader Nick Oliveri's main gig, Queens of the Stone Age, had finally broken on through to the mainstream with their stellar 2002 effort, Songs for the Deaf, so expectations for Drug Problem definitely ran high. But with a stellar supporting cast that contained much of the QOTSA posse (Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, Joey Castillo, etc.) and equipped with a strong set of raw, Mot? rhead-worthy material, Oliveri hit the nail right on the head. If you're expecting an album as diverse as the average QOTSA release, you may be disappointed. But if it's an album chock-full of the aggro punk metal that became Oliveri's trademark on R and Songs for the Deaf ("Tension Head," "Six Shooter," etc.), then you're in luck, as evidenced by such standouts as "Here We Come," "So High, So Low," and "F.Y. I'm Free." That said, Oliveri does sneak in a surprise or two, such as the acoustic guitar-based, Wild West-sounding "All I Can Do" and "Detroit," a heartfelt tribute to Oliveri's late grandfather. But the best is saved for last, as ex-Screaming Trees/part-time QOTSA frontman Mark Lanegan guests on the poignant album closer, "Four Corners."
