Why is Italian leather considered better than leathers from other places? What are the most desirable traits?
When shopping for leather clothes, coats, etc., or furniture, what are the attributes one should look for to know they are getting the best leathers?
The idea that Italian cowhides are better than cowhides from other countries is ludicrous.
For furniture, it should be 100% top grain cow or steer hide. Other animals pelts have too open of a grain to be durable.The top grain of the cow is the densest & most durable. Splits open up the grain which makes them less durable.
The hides should be aniline dyed & pigmented. It doesn't matter if the grain has been corrected or not (for instance from insect bites, etc.)
As for clothing, splits are usually more desirable (unless it's for motorcycle clothing) because it's more supple & lighter weight. Lamb is especially supple. That's al I have on knowledge of leather clothing.
