I have a 1978 Johnson 75 horse power motor (Outboard Jet), most the motor is trashed and beyond worth repairin?

I have a 1978 Johnson 75 horse power motor (Outboard Jet), most the motor is trashed and beyond worth repairing. the jet is still good though, i was wonder (since johnson went out of business in the 80's) if it is possible to buy a new motor (eg. 2008 75 horse mercury) and attach it to the old Johnson pump?

i highly doubt it. likely to be different size or amount of splines on the drive shaft between motor and drive unit, even if you stayed with the same brand (evinrude and johnson, same thing).

even if you can find one that it can work with, you cant buy just the parts you need seperatly for as cheap as if you just bought the entire thing. and then there is still the labor of putting it all together.

as the main boating season is over, now is good time to find bargains on both parts and labor. i just bought a brand new 60 hp merc outboard, for less then the book price of the 40 hp merc. i replaced a 76 johnson, which meant i needed new cables and control box, $7,400 out the door and ready to go boating.

shop around. i looked both online and drove to a couple of dealership/service centers. best price by far was at a dealership/service center.
if you happen to live in cali, i highly suggest you check out boatmasters II in livermore. they gave me a GREAT price, and great service. nicest looking marine shop i've ever seen, and very knowledgable sales staff. livermore is a long drive for me, it was more then worth it.
