How do I stop people from copying my duct tape business at school?

I'm in school and for a little extra cash, I make duct tape stuff. (wallets, tower wallets, coin purses, magic wallets, ect.) I've been doing this for about 2 months, and have made over $200. My problem is, 3 people in this past week have started to copy my idea and start making wallets in my school. I do offer better quality, but kids are not the brightest sometimes, so they buy the thing they can get first, regardless of quality. How do I stop this without making people mad and losing business?

Welcome to the world of marketing.

Now that you have introduced duct-tape items to your school, they have become popular, and others have entered the market. When competition arrives, it's time to rethink what you do.

Are your duct-tape items superior to duct-tape items made by others? How will people know whether they have the superior ones or not? LABEL them. Put a LOGO on them. Make yours stand out from the others. Do you know the difference between a Vera Bradley bag and a knock-off bag? Vera Bradley puts her signature--and a label--on every bag. The difference between a Fossil wallet and a knock-off wallet? The Fossil emblem is on every wallet. A Chevrolet and a Honda? The emblem! Coke and Pepsi? The color scheme and for bottled drinks, the shape of the bottle. You would recognize Coke or Pepsi if it were in a can and the writing were in Japanese, Korean, Arabic, or Cyrillic. Brand recognition is important--when there's competition.

You're on your own for designing a logo and figuring how to put it on each product you make. Perhaps you can have a rubber stamp made that you use with stamp pad and embossing powder to make a raised logo. Don't forget to design a label or tag that you put on every product with the BRAND NAME of the duct-tape items, the logo, and your name and contact information.

If you can advertise, then advertise your wallets--the ones with your logo--as superior to "the other brands." You might even offer a discount--say, 10%--for customers who bring a copy of the ad and give it to you.

It also may be time to do some product development. Are there desirable modifications you can make to your product that the competition doesn't know about? Are there other products you can make and sell?

Keep in mind that eventually, the duct-tape wallet fad will die out. Everyone who wants one will have one, and then you'll be selling only to repeat customers. Most customers will want to move on to something new and different. At that point, you'll need to have new products ready to go.
