How much feed do i feed to my pony?
My exmoor pony is out all year, day and night. At the moment he is having a few hand-fulls of chaff, two small scoops of pony nuts and a mini scoop of vitamins and minerals supplement. he is hacking approximately once a week and schooling once a week. he is a good weight and is working well.
Although once the competition season starts this summer he will be riding 5-6 times a week with a mixture of schooling/jumping/hacking. This change will obviously be introduced slowly.
Last year this feed continued the same during the summer, but he was only ridden 2/3/4 times a week and the riding was not as intensive. He was great to ride and was a good weight, although he could be a little lethargic at times.
what should i feed him this summer?
I would not want to be giving him any more than that in the summer. As the year progresses the grass will improve - it'll start to get richer from about March onwards and in the spring you'll have to make sure his weight is monitored or he could be at risk of piling on the pounds.
Exmoors are of course more suited for rough moorish grazing and can get horribly fat if kept in a green paddock. Most of my natives live on very ungreen hill fields which is old fibre with not a lot of sugar in it; it is best for a native pony to live on poor grazing which you can then top up with a bucket feed if required, rather than letting them loose in bright green grass!
Don't forget that not all chaffs and nuts/cubes are the same. Chaffs vary from the nutritional equivalent of bare straw, up to something as rich as high conditioning cubes, and there's a similar scale in the nuts.
