Most cans are cylinders. Why is canned salmon sold in cans that are a bit wider at the top than the bottom?
I am looking at a 14.75 oz (418g) can of Bumble Bee Wild Alaska Keta Salmon, and the can is about 3" diameter at the top, but only 2.5" at the base. It must be more expensive than the usual can that is used for corn, beans, tomato sauce, etc. Also, it wastes space in the packing cases, and is more likely to topple on store shelves. Totally counterintutive design shape. What is the reason for the unusual shape?
The second girl is correct, as they hand pack the fish into the tins before they are sealed and processed (cooked) I am a former chef from canada, and toured a processing plant when I was a chef in Vancouver BC Canada, it make it easier for them to squeeze the piece in and add the seasonings, before the lids are applied, all our tins are the same way, tuna is not put in in as large a pieces.
