Can anyone tell me the flight rules on handguns?
Like if I went on a business trip and ended up buying a gun, how would I be able to take that back to Texas with me? Just in my check in bag or could it be in my carry on....? Like if I had a pistol case for it with the gun, mags, would I be able to have it in my carry on with no ammo and a gun lock on it?
Any Help Appreciated (because I think this is about to happen)
E.S.O.....that doesn't really help me at all......I have known people who have done it before....(but I have lost communication with them so I can't ask) so it can be done..
It does have to be checked in at the counter. They don't allow you to carry on anymore since the somewhat recent revision the TSA cary on policies. Some airports require the handgun to be inspected by a senior TSA officer before being locked in it's case and tagged which can delay your check in process even further.
The gun can either be locked in a hard case inside a soft suitcase or bag that is being checked or the gun can be in a soft case inside a hard suitcase or luggage. Even if it's just's the firearm it counts as baggage and is subject to a checked baggage fee. Multiple firearms can be checked in one case however.
As for ammo you are usually limited to 10 pounds including the case s just buy ammo when you get home. Ammunition can be locked inside the same case as the firearm with an empty magazine. If the magazine contains ammunition it has to be checked in a separate bag in a hard container as well.
Also, like someone else said, it is a HUGE pain in the rear end plus now with the new Homeland Security law revisions and TSA's new willingness to do whatever Homeland Security tells them to do you're name is added to a "red flag" list. It's not a bad thing, it's just that whenever you go through a security check at an airport you get pulled aside and they search your carry on as well as have you empty your pockets for a pat-down behind the little privacy screen.
Your name is taken off the list three years from the last date of checking a firearm for airline travel.
I know this for a fact as myself as well as my two brothers, father and two uncles are all on the TSA list.
It might be better for you to ship your newly acquired piece home via fedex or UPS. It's insured by this method whereas the airlines don't offer insurance. They don't typically loose handguns however it has happened to my brother. They eventually got it back to him as it fell off the belt and was recovered.
