Is it safe to use a 2-prong plug (USA) in UK with an adaptor?
I want to buy a standing floor lamp but it comes with a 2 prong plug. Is it safe to use it here in the UK with an adaptor on a permanent basis?

The reason I'm considering it is that it's a special daylight lamp for doing craft work, with a magnifier and tray for bits 'n bobs etc. There's one on UK ebay for £115 or I could buy from a UK lamp shop for £150 with a British plug fitted. I didn't really want to pay the extra £35 if it wasn't necessary, but maybe I should as my safety is worth £35 I suppose!
What would you recommend?
The adapter would be OK, but if the lamp is from USA then it may be for 120 vac operation. In the UK the mains is 240 vac. Changing the light bulb to a 240 volt bulb would be OK, but the wiring may not be adequate for 240 volts. It's basically OK, but I prefer electrical wiring to comply with local codes.
ADDED:
Using a UK plug or an adapter from US plug to UK plug would allow you to insert it into a UK mains outlet.
Now, this doesn't take care of the fact that the US bulb would be for 120 volts and that the UK bulb would be for 240 volts.
Using the adapter (plug only adapter) doesn't take care of the voltage difference, but only the pin configuration.
Now, if you use a transformer (step down from 240 to 120), this would take care of the voltage difference. Perhaps by "adapter' you originally meant a transformer.
