Linear Momentum Physics Question?
A cart of mass m1= 0.5kg moves with a velocity of 0.9m/sec to the right on a frictionless track. It collides with another cart of mass m2= 0.5kg at rest. Car m1 stops, and m1 moves in the direction that m1 was traveling. What is the velocity of m2?
Can anyone help me with this question and show me the steps to solve it? Thanks!
remember conservation of momentum. If you have two masses then then M1V1 + M2V2 = m1v1 + m2v2, with capitalized letters representing initial condition and lowercase letters representing final condition.
I assume that you mean "Car m1 stops, and m2 moves....."
Since m2 does not move initially and m1 does not move afterwards we can simplify the equation to M1V1 = m2v2, therefore
0.5 kg * 0.9m/s = 0.5 kg * v2
and v2 = 0.9 m/s

They do a great job covering Cheap Trick's 1979 hit "I Want You to Want Me" and Nick Lowe's "Cruel to Be Kind," keying off of the original artist's style and throwing in a little bit of their own. Other tracks featured in the film include Semisonic's "FNT," Save Ferris' "I Know," Sister Hazel's "Your Winter," Jessica Riddle's "Even Angels Fall," Leroy's "New World," Ta-Gana's "Saturday Night," Brick's "Dazz," Joan Armatrading's "The Weakness in Me," the Cardigans' "War," and Madness' "Wings of a Dove." As good as they are, the best track is George Clinton's immortal "Atomic Dog," heard during one of the film's funniest scenes.
