Travel, Luggages and Vacation Packages

Never been to Italy. I want to go to Rome, Florence & Venice. I only have 5 days. How should I divide the days?

This will be my first time in Italy. I only have 5 full days to spend. My flight is coming into Rome & flying out of rome. I've heard so much about Rome, Venice & Florence. I was wondering how I should divide my day? Also, how should I go about getting to the places? Train? rent a car? Would you guys recommend a hotel or vacation rental? I know Rick Steve (travel guru) recommends staying in one spot and then just traveling to the other destinations. Should Venice & Florence just be day trips & should we just keep our location in Rome? Any tips would be great. Thank you!

Florence would be a pretty easy day trip from Rome if you really wanted to do that, but there's so much to see there that it's worth at least a couple of days. It's only 1 hr 40 min by train using the fast trains. Venice isn't so practical as a day trip though - it's 4.5 hr each direction on the fast trains. The earliest you could get there using the day trains would be 11:17 am and you'd need to leave by 6:36 pm to get the last train back to Rome. You wouldn't get to see much of Venice.

Personally I would spend 2 days in Rome, 2 in Florence, and then go back to Rome for the last day.

However, if you absolutely, positively need to see all of these in one trip because this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Italy, it isn't impossible. You can take the night train from Roma Tiburtina station - it leaves Rome at 10:36 pm and arrives in Venice at 5:26 the next morning - you can sleep in a berth and not need a hotel for that night. You can store your bags at the baggage deposit at the station for the day and spend a full day in the city. You could either take the night train leaving at 11:30 pm arriving back in Rome at 6:56 the next morning, or book a hotel in Florence and take the 6:36 pm train back that far. Spend the day in Florence and then go back to rome for the rest of your time. It's an awful lot to try to fit into 5 days, but if you don't mind being tired, it is possible.
