Does a backpack count as a personal item?
I'm flying with American Airlines one way and United Airlines as a return carrier. I have small rolling upright suitcase that i want to count as my carry-on. Will a backpack count as my personal item or would i have to check the small suitcase ? note: the suitcase is 19 or 20 inches.
I can't speak for American Airlines because I hardly ever fly them, but I fly United A LOT for both business and personal trips. If I am going on a trip where I am not checking in any luggage, I bring my small, rolling suitcase and my laptop case, which is a backpack. While it is just a normal sized backpack, it is big enough to where I can fit other things in it as well my laptop. My small suitcase is about 22 or 23 inches long and fits perfectly in the overhead compartment of a regular jet.
I mention the term "regular" jet because if you fly on one of those small planes that hold less than 70 people, most of them do not have overhead compartments that can fit the rolling suitcase so you will have to get a tag at the gate and leave it at the end of the jetway, You can pick the bag up at the jetway of your arrival destination.
When I have both my backpack and rolling suitcase, at the time of boarding, I will wear my backpack over my back/shoulders and roll my suitcase by hand. Because I'm not physically carrying two things with my hands, at least to me, it looks a little less conspicuous. I've never had a problem with this on any United flight. I can't imagine that American is that much different. As long as your backpack is of normal size and not one of those giant, overnight trekker backpacks, you should be fine.
