Roof Racks / Cargo challenged!?
Hi there. Well, I've got a bit of a challenge. I am moving from Massachusetts out to California. I'm a musician with a studio and a fair amount of gear. I have a Pontiac Torrent, same as Chevy Equinox. I'm quickly finding, I will not have enough space to carry my cases, clothes, two keyboards, a computer, etc.
What are your opinion of roofracks? Are the Thule ones reliable? Will it cut my gas mileage much?
My vehicle has two roof rack bars but does not have cross bars. Would I need them for such a roofrack? Thanks so much for any help.
My experience was camping with an old Ford LTD, but the principle is the same. Gas mileage suffered greatly with the roof rack, the extra height and drag cost considerable. I switch to towing a small trailer got close to normal solo highway mileage. If it is a one shot deal the gasoline penalty will be less than the cost of any more fuel efficient solution. If you think you could use a trailer here in LaLaLand Harbor Freight as some decent low priced ones.
