how to grow food on roof top?
I want to grow a lot of artichoke plants on a flat top roof of a ware house, using pots of course. It may be too much weight for the roof though. So how can I accomplish this without causing too much damage? How can I spread the weight? any tips?
I think I just answered this question. Here is the answer I gave for the other rooftop - artichoke question.
Sounds like a cool project. You really have to be careful of the roof - making sure it can support the load and making sure whatever it is that makes the roof watertight isn't damaged. Know wher the joists are and place your planters so that they are being supported by joists, not just the thinner roofing material.
Artichokes are big plants and need big pots - 18 inches or so deep and 2-3 feet wide. You need a soil mix that is as light weight as possible while still having the nutrients your plants will need. Use about a third perlite, a third compost and a third soil for your mix. The perlite is very light and doesn't absorb water so it helps keep the soil from getting too heavy when you have a rain storm. The compost provides some nutrients, but more important, puts the soil microbes into your containers so that the nutrients that are there are available. Compost weighs much less than soil so will also reduce the load on the roof. The soil anchors your plant and provides many of the chemical elements your plant need.
Make sure your containers have good drainage. Artichokes don't like to be waterlogged and waterlogged soil is super heavy which bodes ill for the roof.
If the roof has a membrane create a structure that protects the membrane from the planters - such as a styrofoam padded platform, and from your feet - such as a styrofoam padded boardwalk structure. An asphalt roof should also have some protection from your planters and foot traffic - but I'm not sure what would be best.
When you plant your artichokes do dredge the roots with a mycorrhizal fungi spore inoculant. These fungi really help deal with water and nutrient stresses which are inevitable in containers. It will make your plants much more resilient and will reduce fertilizer and water needs.
