I want to work for an atlas/travel/map book company as a cartographic designer?
I have an eye for map design, love it, am proficient at the adobe suite, have worked for three years making displays, brochures, and invitations for an English department at my school, won 1 award for a map, and currently getting my GIS certificate, and am a geography/sociology major.
Now, knowing this, is there anything you can tell me that will help my chances of working for such a company? Is there any other courses I should take as an elective, and where should I apply for internships? Any websites you know of?
I'm 21, female.
With this career choice, anyone know what kind of salary I'm looking at?
All I know is that some local governments give geography internships for city planning and the like. Look at your city and the closest big cities, your county, and your state.
And girl, do some research on what the big companies in your industry are! Then, see if they have internships. If you can, try to find an email of someone who works there, ANYONE. Ask how you should prepare to work for their company, and what they are looking for. People tend to try to help eachother out.
Would CAD (computer aided drafting) classes be beneficial? I actually have no idea. They just seem the kind of thing that might be useful.
