US to UK plug adapter question...?

Since I'm from the U.S., I'm wondering what the outlets and stuff are like in the UK. I have family that I'm going to be visiting for a month but I haven't been there since I was about 5. I went onto Amazon.com and bought two All-in-One Travel Power Plug Adapters that convert into adapters for US to UK usage, but my mom informed me that the volt electricity is doubled over there and some of her electronics melted because of it! I'm going to want to bring over a laptop, curling iron and phone charger for the most part, will these protect my electronics?

You don't need just the plug adapters, you need a voltage converter to change the 220 VAC in Europe to the 110 VAC your U.S. appliances need. Your laptop will probably run on the 220 VAC fine. Read the label on the power adapter for it. It should say something like 100 - 240 VAC. If it does, all you need is the adapter for it. If it only says 110 VAC or 120 VAC on it, then you need to use the voltage converter for it as well, but most laptops are built to run from almost any voltage.
Make sure the voltage adapter you get is powerful enough to run the stuff you want to run. There should be labels on everything that gives you either the watts the use or the amps. Your phone charger is a very light load. Check your curling iron to see what it draws and anything else you may want to bring. You can buy voltage converters at any travel store, Radio Shack, and most stores with a luggage section. Find a clerk that knows about them to help you decide which one you need. All the voltage converters I've seen include adapters to plug them into almost any outlet you may run into. Get some extra adapters so you can have your laptop plugged in while also using the voltage converter.
