Design and analysis of a transformer coupled CMOS receiver front end for high frequency applications. $69 Due to the limited spectral bandwidth and expected saturation of existing bands below 6 GHz, the trend for next-generation wireless communications is to utilize higher frequencies for wideband communication applications to avoid spectral congestion. However, this choice requires advanced technologies to build the RF interface. Previous designs operating at higher frequency have used GaAs high-electron mobility transistors (HEMTs), which offer excellent RF performance compared to silicon (Si) metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) due to their higher electron mobility, higher breakdown voltage, and the availability of high quality-factor passives. However HEMT technologies are limited by high fabrication costs and low integration densities when compared to silicon designs. With today's scaled down CMOS transistors showing cutoff frequency exceeding 100 GHz, IC operation at tens of gigahertz frequency range with relatively inexpensive and highly integrated CMOS process is possible. However, there are major challenges to employing CMOS technologies for these high frequency applications. Innovation is needed to overcome the lower supply voltage and lower available gain at the desired high frequency band. Inductive coupling through the use of an on-chip transformer is a promising technique for high frequency applications. In this work, a monolithic 14-GHz CMOS receiver down-converter with on-chip LO and IF bandpass filter has been proposed. This thesis develops an approach to provide robust ride through for DFIG wind generation systems during various types of voltage sag events.;State of the art accommodations for voltage sag ride-through are reviewed and their shortcomings, including excessive spikes in torque and current, or non-compliance with grid codes are noted. A dynamic model of the classical DFIG wind turbine is used to develop analytical solutions to voltage sag response, and verified through simulation. Stator flux is identified as the central state affecting the machine response during sag events.;In order to obtain regulation of stator flux, the DFIG architecture is augmented with a series grid side converter (SGSC). Two topologies for realizing series connection are considered, including use of a series injection transformer (TI-SGSC) or opening the Y point of the machine and connecting it directly to the series inverter (YP-SGSC).;A SGSC control strategy that enables balanced sag ride through by bringing the stator flux into compatibility with the grid voltage during the sag events is developed. The electromagnetic torque and electrical power production are scaled directly with the stator flux, preventing undesirable conditions across the system. The flux is brought back to nominal value upon resolution of the sag. This control strategy is further extended to eliminate the undesirable negative sequence stator flux components during unbalanced sag events.
