Want to make soap, but don't have a weighing scale can I still do it?
I want to mkae cold process soap, but don't have a scale and can't really afford one. Is it possible to convert the weight measurements from ounces to cup, tablespoons, and teaspoons on one of those online conversion websites. or is there a soap recipe website that calls for cups and such, and not ounces or pounds. Any advice
Please don't make cold process soap without a scale to weigh out the proper proportions!
Lye is horribly caustic, and will burn and act like acid. Cold process soap-making needs to be precise, esp. the first time you do it.
If you want to make soap and don't want to get a scale, then try making melt and pour glycerin soap. Super easy, microwave the pre-made soap (clear or opaque), add color, add scent, pour into a mold and it's done (usable!) when it's cool.
With cold process soap, after pouring the soap into a mold, you have to let it cure for four weeks after that before using it. (Otherwise, it can burn/sting, because the lye and oil have not completed the saponification process.)
If you decide you do want to make cold process soap, then get a digital food scale, about $20.
But please don't "wing it" and improvise. Messing with chemicals like lye isn't worth it.
